Our mission: tell people what things cost in health care. It’s the last big remaining opaque market: no one knows what stuff costs, and we’re here to change that.
Here’s a little bit about what we do, on the Harvard Business Review/New England Journal of Medicine website; our home site, here at clearhealthcosts.com, also has a blog, which you can find here.
Our primary tools: shoe-leather reporting, crowdsourcing and data diving. We also partner with big news organizations (KQED public radio in San Francisco, KPCC public radio in Los Angeles, WHYY public radio in Philadelphia, MedPage Today in New York) to collect data and create great journalism. Here is an example of our partnerships.
What we seek: People good at finding information and making it accessible. Entrepreneurial self-starter. Proven record of accuracy, curiosity, tenacity. Public records and data expertise helpful. No health-care background required, but an interest in the topic is necessary.

The ideal candidate will have strong journalism-type skills: Know how to find stuff out and tell people about it.
The best candidates will also have some other skills, including but not limited to these:
- Data skills, including managing and sorting data. If you haven’t done this before, but you’re technically adept, we’re interested.
- Familiarity with WordPress, HootSuite or other Twitter client, MailChimp, Facebook, Google analytics or WordPress analytics, or a demonstrated willingness to learn.
- Social media experience to help us in developing our community, and our conversation with the people formerly known as the audience.
- Other tech skills including software development, MySQL, Ruby on Rails, HTML, CSS.
Part-time for now. Proudly based in New York City. Pay commensurate with performance and experience.
