I am enjoying your series. SPOT ON! Thank You. I may not fall into this category but my story is just as valid. I am an AEMT and volunteer for the local volunteer fire dept in a small Maine coastal town. I also own my own business and work long hours seasonally. In June i was on an EMS call at the house of an elderly (100 year old ) person when i tripped over a vacuum cleaner left on the stair case. I broke my heal and badly sprained my right ankle.I was non weight bearing for 3 months. I could not walk , drive , or do anything as I was on crutches. Because my seasonal business was open at this time I had to hire full time employees to work for me in my store. It cost me almost 20 thousand dollars. As I’m a volunteer for the town I could only get workers comp for the medical bills, and a pay check of $3.86 a week. ( we get paid $11 a call.). Since I dont draw a salary in my real job (I own it) I dont get any money for disability. The town has supplemental insurance for cases like this. I was just informed that I do not qualify for any disability . See the attachment. As I we t into debt to keep my store open by hiring staff to cover for me ,I may have to close my store. I can t recover from this loss. I was told by a woman from the insurance co that the 3 months I was not able to walk was not considered a disability. Its all based on on money disability. Not physical disability. IM still not walking without a cane outside of the house. The real issue here is the HIDDEN COST OF BEING A VOLUNTEER. Good people, doing good work, for nothing (or next to it) put their lives and livelyhood on the line every time they volunteer. In our state local volunteer fire depts and EMS services keep us all safe and supported and we have many of them. And as Maine is the oldest state (average age wise), we have many retired or semi retired people on our departments. Many of the people who volunteer for these positions are self employed motivated people who give to community because they are this way. We all assumed we’d be covered if hurt. If you have a full time job and make $50000 plus, with no job flexibility to answer calls, are you going to volunteer on the local fire dept? Now many of our local firefighters and their wives are rethinking their commitment to our town. After watching my struggle they are worried about what would happen to them if they got hurt.
