Ultrasound requested by OB/Gyn after inconclusive mammogram result. Insurance stated they wouldn't cover because this is an elective procedure. I asked for consideration given familial breast cancer history. I told them it's in their interest for me to be cleared rather than possibility of paying for potential treatment later. They weren't buying it. I told the lab I was going to I couldn't afford to do this test without insurance coverage. They indicated they would offer a $120 price (total, incl radiologist) paid up front. I asked them if they could run it through insurance and I'd pay the cash price, but at least I'd get the credit toward my deductible. Answer - NO. I did ask how much they would bill my insurance and it was in excess of $1200. Why does insurance get billed 10x over cash payment?!?!
