I have Ochsner Insurance but chose to go to East Jefferson for my 3-D Diagnostic Digital Bilateral mammogram because I have had it there for the last 23 years and I know the technicians and the staff. I also have a $3000.00 deductible with Ochsner so I decided to pay for the mammogram out of pocket. As you can see from the bill it states that it is an estimate - Not an Invoice so that leaves them room to bill me for additional charges.

This should have been fully paid mammogram. I had surgery on December 23, 2019. My follow up diagnostic mammogram was in April 2020. This mammogram should have been a free screening, but they charged me for it anyway. My insurance states that prevention care if free of charge. Cigna charged me anyways for this service.

I am a breast cancer survivor and have been getting diagnostic mammograms for the last 15 years. This year I am insured by Aetna. After 2 phone calls to verify benefits I was told twice that the procedure would be covered. After 2 appeals and a letter of necessity from my oncologist AEATNA has denied the claim. After viewing your broadcast I felt I was in the same situation as people interviewed. I hope you can help me get my $450. Back. JoAnn Jensen

I am 40 years old and had my first mammogram done in October 2019. Come to find out I am one of the 40% of women with dense breast tissue. I was called back into my doctor's office for another look because they thought they saw something. They said they needed these additional tests because those where my first images and they don't have any others to compare it to. Concerned, I went back in to get checked...they couldn't find anything after doing another mammogram and an ultrasound. Due to them not being able to find anything they gave me the choice of a biopsy or come back for additional testing at a later date. I chose to go back in for additional testing in April 2020, which I am sure will not be covered by my insurance and will just leave me with another bill I can not afford.

So 2 insurances and I’m still stuck with the large bill. I’ve been fighting for 2 Years even getting a letter of medical necessity from my doctor and it did not help!!! I cancelled my mammogram for this year and don’t plan on going back because my family has enough medical bills and I cannot add to them!

I am 48 years old, do not have a history of breast cancer but there was an issue detected at my annual screening (which was covered) my Dr. ordered a digital mammogram and ultrasound to explore. Thankfully the results were negative but I was surprised to get a bill. I know $308.32 doesn't seem like much to many people but it is to me, especially with all of the money I pay into insurance. IF I did not have insurance I could not have paid for this, it was hard enough to pay for what I did. Thank you.

Under Medicare mammograms are supposed to.be fully covered but because I had breast cancer in 2010. and DCIS in 2016 they tell me that I will never have a free one as they must all be diagnostic.I will.never have a free colonoscopy either because 20 years ago they removed a small polyp. I am.due for another mammogram in 2021 and will.end up.with another bill for $109. Or more. I doubt I will have another colonoscopy. Those of us who.have had breast cancer are at the mercies of our health care system. We are doomed to a life of oncologists and continuing to pay for procedures that if something is found early enough would save more money than the procedure would cost.

I received my routine mammogram in September of 2019. I was called back for a follow-up and completed this on October 18, 2019. When I checked in, I was told there was a $75 upfront fee for this procedure. I was not told about this fee until I was in the office. With hesitation, I paid the fee and was under the assumption that this would be the only charge I would be responsible for. There was nothing seen on the follow-up mammogram and I was cleared. I was later billed for $414.60, in addition to the $75 fee I already paid at time of service. I disputed the charges with no success. I have also requested my medical records because I just don't understand what could have warranted another screening. I am a healthy, 42 years old and my first mammogram in 2018 was normal. I would like a second opinion on my images because I feel like call backs are becoming more and more frequent, leaving insureds on the hook for the additional cost. Not to mention, the hospital/providers are making more money on these call back procedures.

Right side Ultrasound and diagnostic mammogram for a golf ball size lump in my breast. The biopsy that followed that cost me $1526.87 out of pocket. Total cost for the biopsy including lab and ultrasound during the biopsy was $2428.00 and insurance paid 901.13. I had my 1st mammogram last november where nodules were found in my left breast. The diagnostic ultrasound and diagnostic mammogram on the left breast was totaled at $736.00, insurance again paid $147.20, leaving me with a bill for $588.80. To date since November 2018 to july 2019 : 1 routine screening mammogram covered at 100%, 3 ultrasounds, 2 diagnostic mammograms, 1 biopsy later I have accrued $2704.47 in medical bills. I am supposed to have diagnostic mammograms every 6 months now. I'll be skipping those as I can't afford them.

In 2014 I was diagnosed with DCIS breast cancer. After treatment my mammograms became diagnostic and were covered at the time. My insurance changed to Cigna. Cigna does not cover diagnostic screenings. I was not made aware of this prior to the screening. After the screening I received a bill for $744.18 for the mammogram and another bill for the radiologist for $212.46. I appealed this through Cigna, NY State Dept of Health Insurance, NY State Department of Financial Services and finally through Stony Brook Hospital. Cigna & Stony Brook found that my policy does not cover diagnostic and therefore I was responsible for payment. Both NY State departments told me this was not an appeal that their office would handle. I have been on a payment plan with Stony Brook Hospital to pay off the fee. This was a long drawn out process that was mentally, physically & financially draining.

Due to dense breast tissue I needed a follow up after a routine mammogram. I was very concerned since my mother had breast cancer. I was told by the doctor that the follow up was necessary and should be covered as preventative. I had to go to a different diagnostic facility at the hospital. After a digital mammogram, the nurse told me they needed a better view from an ultrasound (so also had procedure 76641.) The results were normal. After the exam, I was billed by both Radiology and the hospital and insurance would not cover most of it because they said it had a diagnostic code and was therefore not considered preventative. The hospital would not change the coding and I tried to fight it but ended up having to pay it all over 8 months. I decided then that I would never go for another follow-up.

When I signed in for my annual mammogram I wrote on the form that I found a lump. The nurse said that meant I had to come back the following week when the doctor was there. I did. A few weeks later I got the bill. I was stunned. There was no mention that I would be getting a different kind of test or that it wasn’t covered by insurance. Everyone in my family has had breast cancer so I didn’t think twice about coming back when the doctor was available. But I would have appreciated if they alerted me to the crazy price (versus $0) if I had checked that box no.

This is sad it is so unaffordable to get a mammogram if you have dense breast tissue, I found a lump, went to my OBGYN. He scheduled me a diagnostic mammogram. Had the Mammogram and an ultrasound it was determined a water filled cyst! Thank goodness but I knew a large bill would come my way. I was actually more worried about the bill than the lump. As I am still making payments on a Mammogram that turned into a biopsy. That also determined to be a water filled cyst. I could not believe my eyes when I opened that bill. It was close to $5,000!!!!! I had a $10,000 deductible and it was not covered after the first mammogram that found a spot that lead to the biopsy! It is just sad! These are very large bills for working families when you already pay a large monthly premium. I wish healthcare cared. When I called both my insurance and the hospital billing no one could help lower the cost. Only set you up with a company that offers 12 months no interest or 11 percent interest rate for longer. So sad ..... interest on medical..... really

I had to go back for a second 3D mammogram on my right breast as they saw something on the original mammogram. Said I would need to go back in 6 months so they could monitor what they found as my breast tissue is very dense but they said nothing to worry about as far as they could tell. I no longer have insurance and have not been back as I just barely finished paying the above off and can't afford it now.

I had breast cancer lumpectomies in both breasts 1 year apart. Early 2016 was the first, then at the end of 2016 after a diagnostic mammogram they found cancer in other breast. So I have to be labeled diagnostic Not routine per the Insurance and because of that rates are much higher. It took me over 6 months to pay off. Family of 4 with 1 child in college the other in middle school & both my husband & I work. Only saving grace was I could do a payment plan. I was supposed to have a 6 month diagnostic mammogram at the end of 2017 but I couldn’t afford it, especially with the holidays coming. I waited over a year in Oct of 2018 before I had another. thank you

I was so thrilled to see this piece on CBS. I had just recently received a bill and could not believe what I owed and that it was so much. I thought...you called me and this was an extension of my preventive care. I even provided them with all my past videos to help them because I do have dense tissue, and they still requested that I come in. They only took diagnostic images of the right side and that cost was $919. I sat in the waiting room and then she called me back. She said, we don't think it's anything, but we really want to make sure so the doctor has requested that you have an ultrasound. No price was mentioned or the fact that this is an additional cost. I did not realize, I just said yes to another $918 for the ultrasound....and for what she described as "we don't think it's anything, but let's do it anyway." I appreciate and think it's important to have what I've come to learn "diagnostic tests," but it all should fall under preventive care. Thank God I'm OK and it's wonderful to have the peace of mind, but now I'm stressed and frustrated that I have to pay almost $1,400. With this being the case, many women (women without insurance, women of color, women that can't afford the additional costs, etc.) will probably start to decline the extra tests, and oh what a devastating cost that will be to women.

This is absurd. First Mammogram was preventative, second was because of dense tissue that was calcium crystals (common). I refused to have the ultrasound because the Dr. said the second was sufficient, but the nurse was going to usher me in to have it done anyway! Its nothing but a $$$ game... Health care costs are handled like a scam artist. If any other industry treated their customers this way, they would go to jail for fraud.
