I have not had any medical procedure done but I felt compelled to tell my short story. I pay $175 a month for private insurance by Health Partners and I only make less then $800. I could have gone with a subsidized government plan but decided not to b/c of confusing websites and paperwork w/ to much confusing information. Private insurance was easyer to sign up with a more streamlined process. Yes I’m a Millennial so I expect a high quality experience and i’m Willing to pay for it. -Andrew

I sought and received treatment from a dermatologist for the removal of a skin lesion. When I got the itemized bill, I saw and paid for two charges: a charge for the office visit and another for the procedure. The third charge said ACNE. I called and told the billing department I didn't have acne. I was put on hold so the charge could be researched. The staffer came back and I was told ACNE was an acronym. What for I asked. I don't remember the response but I do remember that the first of the four words did not begin with the letter "A." I explained that didn't make sense. I was put on hold again. The staffer came back and told me just to ignore that charge; my bill was paid in full. (The date I gave for this procedure is an approximate. I don't remember the exact date but could certainly get that information and other verification from VUMC.)

I want to comment on why the hospitals have to charge so much. I realize there are some medical clinics looking to have big profits, but many rural hospitals are not-profit organizations. They accept medicaid and medicare for all patients and the reimbursement from them is under 40% of the fee. So they have to set prices high enough to break even. Insurance companies are reimbursing less and less as well. At my dental clinic, medicaid reimburses 25% or less of our fee and some insurance companies out there are not always much better. Our overhead is 60-70%. Our expenses remain the same and the hospital expenses remain the same regardless of the reimbursement. You need to look at the big picture and realize that it's not just about price transparency. Insurance companies play a big role and they profit millions.

I live in Dallas and my employer recently switched to BCBS for health insurance. I have a diagnosed eating disorder and my provider has been recommending residential treatment for some time now. My old health insurance, United Healthcare, was going to cover it, but Blue Cross will not. They are denying me life-saving coverage because they don't want to look at the facts of my case. My provider was on the phone with Blue Cross for 3 hours today, trying to get authorization, and the case worker at Blue Cross hung up on the provider. This behavior is not only unprofessional, but highly unethical and could cost me my life. I know this is a news-worthy story and I just want to bring attention to Blue Cross' unethical, bureaucratic system. I know you cover stories about health insurance, especially the injustice surrounding health insurance, and would love your help in spreading the message!

RNS implant for epilepsy involved five brain operation in 2019. I paid no money. But the price I pay is that I live on a system which requires me to play a system where I hide income and cash I save. I collect Social Security Disability Income and am afraid to try to get a regular job. If employed: Would an employer's insurance cover my pre-existing condition? Would I qualify for the insurance (Medicare / Medicaid) I have now? What would happen to the income I worked so hard for--spend it all on medical costs until $0 left then get government help? If the rich have ways to put aside assets so their wealth doesn't get taxed why shouldn't I be able to hide my income to get medical treatment I have needed all my life?

Good day, I hope this email finds you well. Thanks to CBS (local) I was aware of this loophole hospitals seem to be "using". There was a segment on mamogram billing (screening vs. diag.) Thanks to our local channel (9&10 news (CBS)) I was aware of this and a red flag went up when the hospital tried to get my doc to rewrite his script for a mamogram screening. Since I have a family history and I had some pain in the breasts the hospital called the doc's office back right away to get him to change the mamogram screening order to a mamogram diagnostic order. This took over the weekend to do, I called the doc's office to make sure that he wanted screening, because I realized that if I were to get a screening it's a more powerful (and expensive) test. Therefore, if they find nothing in the diagnostic mamogram I would most certainly be charged. Thankful I had seen a CBS segment on this. The doc wanted screening and then compare it at a later date if I'm still having issues. I feel like the hospital was trying to push me into a bigger more expensive test. I also experienced this at the eye doctor's office. I have state issued medic aid and with both my glasses and my sons I was pressured into buying digi- smart glasses or a bifocal that is not covered for me or my son by medicaid, but was necessary. This happens in other places too, it's called shady salesmanship ;) loopholes. Hope my story helps your cause! Best of luck with the most warm and kind well wishes. Good day! Jess S. 989.590.8702

I created a company called Medical Audit Services which was acquired by Kemper National Insurance Companies around 1990 and I stayed on as CEO for 5 years. The amount of abuse and corruption I saw in reports from healthcare providers would totally shock all Americans then and today and why healthcare costs are almost $4 trillion and will continue its abhorrent growth. There are solutions, but I doubt it will ever happen. We need a healthcare tsar to put controls in place, the only way to stop the abuse. my cv/proof of experience http://tchapman.com/detailedpage.html

I don't know where to go on your webpage. But, NOBODY is asking why the doctors are charging ridiculously high prices for their services... For example, the story today... $220,000 for a fused vertebrae??? One doctors charge... $265,000 for the Neurosurgeon??? The doctor and hospital bills totaling $650,000 ???? Beyond reasonable... Health care is fine (at least it used to be... before Obama)... the doctors and hospitals are PRICE gouging everyone... There is NO reason for the doctors to charge this much.... NOBODY is asking "why doctors can get away with this"... Insurance companies and Pharma companies are getting blamed... it is OBVIOUS that doctors and hospitals are the real problem.... ASK this QUESTION … Please???
