When my husband had outpatient surgery for a bone spur on his shoulder, the surgeon charged $8100. My insurance only approved $147. I don't understand the difference in prices. Without insurance, I'm sure I would have been billed the $8100. This is not the only crazy bill I received from this procedure.

I have GREAT insurance and truly no complaints - but I'm appalled at the "system;" if the hospital can write off almost $70,000 in charges than clearly what is billed is not what the procedure actually cost. One of the charges on this bill was $315 for a urine pregnancy test...the same kind you buy at the drugstore. My frustration is with the providers - I do feel in my particular case that my insurance is negotiating and trying to keep costs down. My hope is that by staying in network and doing my research I will be able to keep my out of pocket costs to a minimum.
