Freelance reporting opportunity, February 2023

Join our team at clearhealthcosts.com, where we’re bringing transparency to the health care marketplace by telling people what stuff costs.

What we seek: Entrepreneurial self-starter. Fast learner. Proven record of accuracy, curiosity, tenacity. No health-care background required, but an interest in the topic is necessary. We’ll teach you a lot about health costs.

What you’ll do: Pitch and write stories about the state of healthcare, with an emphasis on health costs, and also on how to navigate the healthcare system in the United States. Expect a sharp learning curve, with knowledgeable and helpful colleagues, plus connections to people in the healthcare system to help you get a headstart.

Willing to consider people with 1-3 years of journalism experience, or career-changers.

Pay depends on your experience and the complexity and length of stories. If you’re on an hourly gig with us, we pay $30-$35, depending on experience.

Health care is the last big remaining opaque marketplace: No one knows what procedures and tests cost, and we’re here to change that. We are changing people’s lives.

We’ve helped people save thousands on their bills, and we’ve helped them get healthier. They call us their heroes. We say we’re the happiest people in journalism these days.  Also we won a ton of prizes; here is a recent one, the national Public Service Gold award from the Society for Professional Journalists for network news, which we won with CBS.

Here is our press page.

To get a sense of what we do and how we do it, take a look at our founder’s 7-minute TED talk, which has surpassed 2 million views.

We are committed to pursuing and hiring a diverse workforce and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We encourage members of historically underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

Please e-mail a note telling us why you’d be great for this job, with a resume or link to online resume, and six pieces of your writing reflecting range and breadth, to jeanne@clearhealthcosts.com. Also please let us know where you heard of this opportunity.  Deadline Feb. 14, for a start around Feb. 21.
