Freelance reporting opportunity – ClearHealthCosts, January 2022

Join our team at clearhealthcosts.com, where we’re bringing transparency to the health care marketplace by telling people what stuff costs.

We’ve got a 4-week opportunity, full time in New York City in January-February, to join our team on a health care pricing survey. This will be primarily phone work with a fast-paced team. We’d prefer 5 days a week, M-F 10-6, though 4 days a week will work also. (Not 3 days.)

We had planned to be in the office, but with the Omicron surge, we may continue to do this work remotely.

What we seek: Entrepreneurial self-starter. Fast learner. Proven record of accuracy, curiosity, tenacity. No health-care background required, but an interest in the topic is necessary. We’ll teach you a lot about health costs.

Willing to consider people with 1-3 years of journalism experience, or career-changers.

Health care is the last big remaining opaque marketplace: No one knows what procedures and tests cost, and we’re here to change that. We are changing people’s lives. We’ve helped people save thousands on their bills, and we’ve helped them get healthier. They call us their heroes. We say we’re the happiest people in journalism these days.

Also we won a ton of prizes; here is a recent one, the national Public Service Gold award from the Society for Professional Journalists for network news, which we won with CBS. Here is our press page. To get a sense of what we do and how we do it, take a look at our founder’s 7-minute TED talk, which has surpassed 2 million views.

We are committed to pursuing and hiring a diverse workforce and are proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We encourage members of historically underrepresented communities to apply, including people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

Pay $30-35 an hour.

Please e-mail a note telling us why you’d be great for this job, with a resume or link to online resume, and six pieces of your writing reflecting range and breadth, to jeanne@clearhealthcosts.com. Also please let us know where you heard of this opportunity.

Deadline Jan. 24, for a start around Jan. 31. If we are in person, proof of vaccination and masking will be required.
