Doctor used a small camera during initial office visit to check inside my nose with previously confirmed broken and deviated septum though he was ordering a CT scan in addition before surgery. Unitedhealthcare says such endoscopy is surgery even though no cutting was involved and applied a $250 copay and paid 80% of remaining $6.20.

The “ procedure” took place for a total of no more than 10 minutes ( but 30 Minutes if wait time ). I was billed the $470 for the procedure ( which was reduced somewhat by the contractual rate established by the insurance ). But I was also billed $250 for the office visit ( for which I paid only $60 as copay ) and I am still wondering what the office visit consisted of since the totality of my time spent in the office was for the nasal endoscopy. Perhaps the “ good afternoon, how do you feel “ counts as office visit ?

The camera based examination thru nostril was meant to be diagnostic, took less than 5 minutes to get done. Its a tiny camera attached on a tube and the doctor sees hd monitor visuals when tube goes through the nostril! Unfortunately we were not made aware of huge extra cost of $1000.outside of office visit charges of $400 for ENT specialist. Was a rude shock when our billing came through in mail after a few days!

this is always billed as a surgery; it doesn't matter who does it. I've had it done several times over the years- it literally takes the doctors two minutes to do this, but I know it is often necessary, and I never agree to it unless I myself want the information too, and at least I know ahead of time it is expensive. Unfortunately, this year, Blue Cross made it so I had to pay not only a surgery co-pay but also a facility fee. What a joke. Insurance companies should just pay this as an office procedure somehow.
