At the time of the allergy test I was insured, however I called prior to see if my insurance would cover this procedure. I was told that my visit to see an allergist would be covered, but no testing (which, quite frankly, is the point of seeing an allergist). When arriving to the office, I asked what they would charge my insurance vs what they would charge for "self pay". They would charge my insurance anywhere between $250-$700 depending on what they tested me for. If I were to do "self pay" they would charge me $250 flat for all of the testing. I opted to self pay because I already knew that my insurance wouldn't cover it, and realistically I just saved my $30 copay, even if they did only bill the insurance for $250.

We had not met our deductible so owed out of pocket the in-network rate. However, this was just one of many tests the doctor provided during the visit without itemizing at the time of the procedure or explaining that there was more than one test being performed. So we were shocked when the tally was over $700 owed. Out of network, it would have been $1500 for a 5 minute visit to find out what was causing my husband's allergies! And it was just ragweed!

1 office visit ($265) for testing to rule out allergy to novacain varieties. qty. 12 skin tests (in sets of 4) and 1 shot($2400.00). This was all one visit of about 1.5 hours getting prick tests then waiting for reaction. Then lastly a shot in the arm. Allowable charges per Anthem 1852.18, less 1500 deductible. They discounted 812.82 and actually paid 268.58. We set up payment plan to pay balance. This is for unemployed college student , however Aurora will not allow him to apply for financial assistance since he has insurance.
