Still waiting on insurance. Hospital cost, of course separately, for the visit was another $1000, which means I am being charged for walking into the emergency room and having a nurse ask me what happened and tell me to wait in the waiting room and then have another nurse come in and ask again what happened, allergies, any other issues and tell me to wait for the MD. The MD looked at fingers, decided on lavage, steristrips and glue as I had already butterflied it so the edges of the cut were clear and easy to realign. I got a tetanus shot from the nurse. The nurse lavaged the wound and the MD took 5 min to steristrip my finger and put glue on. The information on this Physician bill is the MD evaluation and treatment. So basically the bill is saying the MD (not the nurses-that is part of hospital charge) should get paid $970 for 5 min of care. The medicare charge for this cpt code (which means the actual cost of service) is $64.

I visited the ER on a Sunday morning (after calling tele-medicine for an Eye Stye). I thought I could avoid urgent care (and its expense) and get a script for an antibiotic cream, but the Tele-doctor thought it was something more involved than it was and told me to go to the ER stat (in hindsight.... I shouldnt have listened). I was seen at the ER by a PA. The total length of visit was 10 minutes. She diagnosed it as a Blepharitis ( a small eye infection). I received a script for an $8 antibiotic ointment and sent on my way. No diagnostics or specialists involved other than her quick visual inspection of my eye and her attending phyician's visual confirmation of the minor infection. The ER coded my visit as Level 3 (same as a heart attack) as they later explained because I received "complex discharge instructions".The "complex" instructions were to use a warm compress 3x daily. That's it. Basically the most basic er visit possible. I challenged this all the way up to the President of Mt Sinai- whose assistant was very nice, but also very unwilling to adjust the coding. They will not adjust the amount. In addition they mischarged me for the Dr's bill ( not taking into account the insurance negotiated discount) and im currently disputing that portion. Here's the total Breakdown: $1400 for the ER $330 for the ER Doctor. The in network insurance discount (Oscar) made it $1220 and $223. Im happy to scan the bills in if you'd like. Also, each person I spoke to said I wouldnt have listened to the tele-medicine doctor and I should get a Health Savings Acct. (which like most plans available on NYS Health's website, are not eligible for a HSP) Im a freelancer, and buy my insurance on the exchange. If I could do better, I would, but this is my only option. It's terrible and stress inducing ( as well as wallet depleting!) As a result I have dropped Oscar as my insurance, and am switching all my doctors away from Mt. Sinai. Thank you.
