SUMMARY: How does the health-care industrial complex resemble the former Soviet Union? Click here to see my Ignite speech at O’Reilly Media’s #HealthFoo camp last weekend.

The O’Reilly Media team puts on an amazing event called “Foo” (Friends of O’Reilly) in several general areas — HealthFoo, ScienceFoo, NewsFoo and an overall Foo. It’s an unconference, where participants set the agenda and deliver the sessions.

The event featured some amazing insights about what’s happening in health care. There were sessions on Big Data, wearable devices, where’s the money going, the FDA and 23andme, research on quality metrics, community health and just about anything else you can think of.

One of the only scheduled events is the “Ignite” evening, in which participants give a 5-minute chat that’s meant to inspire — but be quick! You have 20 slides, and they auto-advance after 15 seconds. Here’s mine, on how the health-care industry resembles the former Soviet Union.
