People are often surprised to find that their insurance policies may cause them to pay more for prescriptions in the form of co-pays than they would pay if they simply put away their insurance card and chose to use cash. This is not true for every medication or every policy but it’s true often enough that we tell people to ask every time: How much will that cost? How much will it cost me, on my plan? What’s the cash price? Also, medication prices can vary widely, so it’s smart to ask more than one provider. Here’s a smart series on high co-pays by our partner Lee Zurik, head investigative reporter and anchor at WVUE FOX 8 Live in New Orleans. The series, “Medical Waste,” won a gold medal this year from the Investigative Reporters and Editors, journalism’s premier investigative organization.
